The Taliban’s education ministry said all-male high school students across Afghanistan must resume classes starting on Saturday.

The orders applies to students and teachers in grades six and above, according to a statement issued on Friday, with lower grades having already been told to return to school.

To the disappointment of many female high school students, the statement did not specify when they could resume their lessons – or if they could ever again.

Earlier, the Taliban ministry of higher education said male and female university students could continue their studies, but only in gender-segregated classes with the women wearing full Islamic cover.

For 20 years university students of both genders studied in joint classes and did not have to abide by any specific dress code. That all changed once the hardline Islamists came to power a month ago.

The militant group, in the first reign between 1996 and 2001, completely barred women from work and education outside the home.
