Financial Reporters: Job Description
The ICIR is expanding its operations and seeks experienced personnel to join its editorial team. Candidates should have an eye for precision and be comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom/media environment. We’re looking for someone with exceptional financial news judgement and an investigator’s mind. And though we value deliberate, careful checking, speed is also important. Candidates must also have strong editing skills and a conversation starter on the Internet.
The financial reporters will be part of a team of reporters/editors, so a team spirit is a must-have, while an entrepreneurial mindset is an added advantage.
LOCATION: LAGOS
Responsibilities
- Organizes materials, determines focus and writes business and finance stories according to the ICIR editorial style and standards.
- Conduct quick and accurate research to gather verifiable facts on trending business and finance news to create news content.
- Builds expertise in the beat through research, experience and growing a network of relevant contacts in the community.
- Work to ensure fairness and accuracy; correct contradictions and omissions in consultation with editors and writers; correct spelling and grammar.
- Thinks both visually and verbally: Takes photos and shoots/edits video to accompany stories as needed.
- Research ideas to help develop regular business/finance news insights and analysis.
- Must be able to travel to events or venues for stories, sometimes at short notice.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Available to work five days a week and weekends, sometimes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Economics, Finance or related field is required, with proven knowledge and experience working in a contemporary newsroom, producing online content.
- Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure.
- Knowledge of the financial and stock market specifically is compulsory.
- Ability to interpret financial statements and use Microsoft Excel or any other spreadsheet is mandatory.
- At least 2 – 3 years of business/finance reporting experience. Experience in financial advisory reporting is a plus.

VIDEO & PHOTOGRAPHY INTERNSHIP
The ICIR is searching for talented young candidates to join its Digital Content team for a six-month internship. The interns will serve as valued members of the team, providing support for both the digital content and editorial teams.
The candidate should have an eye for precision and be comfortable working in a fast-paced newsroom/media environment.
LOCATION: Abuja
Responsibilities
- Assisting with all aspects of video production, including scriptwriting, shooting and editing.
- Supporting all aspects of video projects.
- Preparing files for the website and social media platforms
- Brainstorming video documentary designs and concepts
- Other duties that may be assigned by the team lead
Qualifications
We are seeking an undergraduate or recent graduate pursuing a degree in Mass Communication, Broadcast Journalism, video production or a related field of study.
Other requirements include:
- Ability to think creatively and collaborate with other staff of the ICIR.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple projects
- Strong tech skills especially in handling digital cameras and video equipment
- Desire to learn and adapt to new digital tools and technologies
- High level of motivation and willingness to learn
